When I say exercising anywhere is possible, it’s not a gimmick. Recently, the Vice President of the US came out on an official trip through Asia, stopping in Vietnam. I (and others from the Embassy) was involved in supporting the visit. In my role, I found myself wearing a suit for days, riding in Motorcades, and attending high profile meetings. This is not to brag–it’s what we do as diplomats–but it’s the context for this blog post. Throughout this exciting week in a highly professionalized setting, I exercised CONSTANTLY! When I was riding around in the passenger seat of one of the Motorcade vehicles, I did knee taps and used my resistance cords. When I was on the tarmac at the airport, I did squats and running in place. There were many activities, some which got delayed. So I found myself waiting at times for a meeting to start or a meeting to finish–and I took advantage of each of those occasions to exercise. No, I didn’t want to find myself completely sweaty, so I took things in stride. I didn’t go crazy with my jumping jacks, but I did enough to get the heart pumping and the blood flowing. I used the rest rooms to wash up (the essentials) and made a point to take showers 2-3 times a day when time permitted. I kept my hygiene kit handy and brought a change of clothes and even work exercise clothes UNDER my suit. If you ever read my book, The Complete Guide to Airport Exercise, I talk about in detail how to prepare for and plan for exercising anywhere, anytime. And that’s really what it boils down to–just some creative advanced preparation. And some motivation. What did I have to gain by doing all of this? I was able to complete my 3-4 hours of exercise each day despite a crazy schedule (and no, that doesn’t have to be YOUR goal, that’s just my personal fitness regimen). I cut out a lot of hours where I would otherwise be waiting around, not really accomplishing too much (I hate that!). And I was able to actually inspire OTHERS (yes, even Secret Service) about how to do the same. I dare any critics to come up with a strong argument why this shouldn’t work because I just did it, and it worked perfectly! Yes, I was mindful of my surroundings and safety and professional protocol and respect for others (that’s a must–a given–just like I mention in my book). In the end, I met my goals, I stayed in shape, and the endorphins from that exercise kept me alert, feeling healthy, and keeping the pounds off. 🙂 Write me, and I can help you figure out your schedule and how to do the same!
