A lot of people don’t realize that the workplace or professional environments do NOT mean that you can’t exercise. I have found that it just takes a bit more creativity and preparation, but the payoff is that: 1) I get more exercise done and 2) I waste less time in the process. Win-win! For example, I was recently supporting a high level event for work (I can’t say who exactly, just yet!). I was a Control Officer (so I had a coordinating and logistics role) at a fancy hotel, where my guests were going from meeting to meeting. At one point, we were waiting in the hotel lobby, since the next meeting was 20 minutes away. Some of my colleague used this time to chat, others checked email, and others just say in the hotel lobby chairs — waiting. These are those precious moments that can be converted into exercise opportunities. Knowing that I would likely have several of these “waiting around” periods, I came prepared. I walked down to a quiet and discreet area of a nearby conference room. And I did some basic jogging in place–which depending on how hard you go, is really exceptional calorie-burning. I put some paper towels down my shirt to absorb sweat (though my plan was NOT to exercise until the point of massive sweating). I also had a workout shirt UNDER my professional shirt, and when the moment came, I took off my long sleeve shirt. to keep it clean and allow my sweat to evaporate better. Again, I made sure to stay discreet and very aware of my surroundings. After 15 minutes or so, I was only sweating lightly. I went to the restroom. I used my hygienic kit (some soap, a little hand towel, extra hair gel, deodorant), and I cleaned up very effectively in about 3 minutes. I gave myself another minute or so to just breathe and let my body cool down a bit. I put back on my work shirt. I put my slightly sweaty workout shirt into a plastic bag (also part of my hygienic kit). And I was back in the lobby ready to support my guests to their next meeting (though they ended up being delayed by another 10 minutes). 🙂 Some people may say–oh this is too hard, too inconvenient, too much to remember. It’s really not. Like anything else that’s worth it in life, if you put in the little extra time, it will pay huge dividends. And think of this as more than just a one-time solution to figuring out how to fit in exercise. I did this little exercise routine that day for 15 minutes. But then I got to repeat it 3 more times that same day (yes, these guests had a lot of meetings!). So without even having to exercise at lunch (though I did) or ride my bike to and from the hotel (which I did), I just took back 45 minutes of my day and converted into pretty good cardio activity. I reached my calorie-goal faster, I had less exercise to do at the end of the day, and I felt honestly more bad-ass knowing how it easy it was to do something that’s healthy and efficient.
