Yes, I even exercise when I go to the grocery. Grocery-shopping is one of those necessary errands that most of us have to do. It takes time and adds to this feeling of “there’s never enough moments in a day to do what I want, including exercise”. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Going to the grocery store can be a easy and creative way to burn calories and save time. How? By simply incorporating exercise into the activity. First, for many of us, we don’t live all that far from a grocery store. So by biking or walking, that is an easy way to burn some calories and avoid having to drive (which frankly I consider a big waste of time usually). I know, if you are going to carry 15+ bags, this becomes less feasible (though I have been known to carry that many–my limit is 17–you might surprise yourself!). That fix is easy by breaking up grocery-store visits throughout the month and getting only a few bags each time. But either way, even if you “sometimes” bike or walk to the store, it’s a great way to feel accomplished and help stay in shape. But the fun doesn’t stop there. 🙂 While at the grocery store, we often find ourselves waiting in some kind of line–at the meat section or at the cash register. That’s a great opportunity to do some leg squats or or lift some heavy items (lifting weights is lifting weights, after all). I do make sure to social distance and be aware of my surroundings, like I do whenever I exercise. But it doesn’t take that much room and is a much better use of time than just standing there. I have done this for years–and a typical grocery store visit can add anywhere from 5 minutes to over an hour of exercise. And this means I don’t have to go for that evening run! (Walking fast with grocery store bags burns an incredible amount of calories!). Contact me to learn more.
